I'm going to try my hand at making stools where the leg tenons in the seat are about 5/8". Does anyone have any experience with the Robert Larson wood pointer #800-2890 https://www.amazon.com/Robert-Larson-Co-Wood-Pointer/dp/B008O919MW? Amazon doesn't have it so I've had my local tool store put my name on one for the next order. It's about half the price of the Lee Valley version http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=54835&cat=1,180,42288,54835. I'll get the Lee Valley one if I have to but boy they're really proud of their stuff.
I don't have a reamer so making one probably isn't real feasible.
I think you are looking at the wrong items unless I am misunderstanding what you are trying to build. I think you are looking for the regular tenon cutter http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=42299&cat=1,180,42288,45539
. Which is an expensive way to do it instead of using hand tools like I n the Paul Sellers video below:
BTW, I had seen these LJ users posts here before may be worth checking out:
i dont know about the robert larson wood pointer but i have the lee valley that i used on a maloof rocker.it makes a tapered tenon if thats what your wanting to do?
Clicking on the Amazoo link you posted, I get "Currently unavailable."
The LV tenon cutters you link to are under 50 bux, this isn't expensive in that game They are also 100% beer/meat powered, no putting them on a drill.
SMP showed you the drill chucked alternatives, twice the money.
Also are the Lumberjack models They make cutters from 1/2" up to IIRC 2" They also have some kits where you can get a few sizes for lower price, if you get into it, they rock. You can couple these with some serious drills, that will litterally take down an 1 1/2" log like a good electric does to a #2 pencil, Bzzzzzzzzzzt gone. Overall for value, and selection, they are the real deal.
"The top of the legs needs to be a tapered tenon that is about 3-1/8" long and is 5/8" diameter at the tip. You can make this tenon in a variety of ways. I rough out the shape on the lathe (though a drawknife is equally effective). Then I use a 5/8" Veritas Tapered Tenon Cutter to finish the job. It's like sharpening a big pencil."
So I'm looking for a tapered tenon cutter. The green wood powered cutters are a bit much for me since I'll rarely use them. I'll look at doing them by hand also-- out to the hot garage now to practice some I guess. It's 100+ today and it gets hot pretty quick out there.
I'll look at the videos and other links.
Thanks.
