I have a 6 inch Delta J-6 2003 jointer. I need to level the out feed table, probably with a shim. I can’t figure how to lift the table and where to insert the shim. Any advice?

A good quality well fitted jointer should not require shimming. If it was built right, the wear if any should occur on the infeed table, since this is the one you adjust. However you can’t shim the infeed table because you are adjusting it all the time, so you have to shim the outfeed table to match up with the infeed table. The cheaper imports may have faulty slides or cheap castings that can deform if not aged properly.

I assume you have cleaned the slides and have good metal to metal contact, to eliminate that as a possible problem. To start off with set your infeed table at exactly 0 on your infeed scale. Taking a long good quality straight edge loosen the set screws on the outfeed table and adjust it to as close to parallel as you can get it with your infeed table. Snug the set screws back up, and with the straight edge held in tight contact to the length of the infeed table, both at front and back, you can now determine if your outfeed table is drooping or raised, at the end edge of the outfeed table. Use a set of parallels to determine parallelism front to back.

With the set screws loosened on the outfeed table you should be able to slightly rock the table up and down. This will allow you to slip shims in the slide between the table and base casting, easy for a drooping table, a little more difficult for a raised table, you will have to remove the cutter head to get at the top of the slides. Start with thin stock tighten the set screws on the table and check with your straight edge. Repeat if necessary doubling up the shim stock or using thicker stock.

For a table that is drooping or raised, shims go on both slides in the top or bottom. If however the table is not parallel in the front to back dimension the shims go on only one slide both at the top and bottom.

When both tables are parallel lock down the outfeed table, as long as it remains parallel it should never be adjusted. Check your knives they may need adjusting, and your good to go.

Shim stock can be purchased at industrial maintenance suppliers, in many thicknesses, here is a picture of my thinest 0.001 and my thickest 0.012.
