Hello fellow wood addicts.
I am in search of pieces of lumber from the Belleau Wood Forest in France. I realize that these are probably, if not, virtually rare. I have only had one 12×12 plank in my possession and currently finishing up a project/gift for a retired Marine buddy of mine. In the process I have had many questions from other gentlemen that have also served in the Corps for some other possible projects.
Some of you readers may understand the significance of this Forest with the US Marines, if not I encourage you to educate yourself on one of the most prevalent battles involving the USMC.
The gentleman that I acquired this plank from can no longer get anymore, for he has lost contact with his source.
So if you are, in any way, able to help, please respond.
Or email [email protected]

Obscure? For a good cause? Sounds like fun!
BTW – I am idiot Klutz, but like to play with Google maps and might be able to find some sources?

Here we go:

- There is Lucas Saw mill (online retailer?) at 50 Rue du Château, 02810 Torcy-en-Valois, France, roughly 1 mile from Belleau forest monument. A person named Frank owns/runs the company:
https://www.dmb-webstore.com/contenu-5738-fr.htm

- There is Crozat Frères (Scierie- sawmill) at 25 Avenue de la Gare, 02470 Neuilly-Saint-Front, France, in Neuilly-Saint-Front about 5 miles north of Belleau forest monument.

-There is Tortorolo Père et Scierie (Father/Son sawmill) at 24 Bis Rue de la Cloterie, 02130 Beuvardes, France, ~10 miles east of Belleau forest monument.

- There is a commercial sawmill operation located at 16 Rue du Presbytère, 02600 Villers-Cotterêts, France, owned by Lefenvre Group ~12 miles away
http://www.groupe-lefebvre.fr/?lang=en

- In total there are ~8 small private saw mills located within 14 miles of Belleau forest monument.

All this from one Google map link:

https://www.google.com/maps/search/scierie+near+Belleau,+France/@49.1014113,3.183488,11z

Do you know anyone who speaks French? Phone numbers are listed in Google for all of them. :-0)
Just make sure you check your long distance plan costs before making calls.

Worked for multinational with office(s) all over world. Used to cost ~ $1 per minute to call EU on corporate cell plan. but it can cost $3+ minute on personal cell phone without proper international rate package. Employer used to raise hell with me for sitting on cell phone for a conference call for 2 hours at night, as we had dedicated VIOP servers in all offices I was supposed to use for international tele-meetings. hehe
For the occasional international caller, much better option than land line and cell phone is to use Skype or one of one of the other computer based VOIP services. Skype will sell you a month of unlimited international minutes for $15-20?

PS – Finding stuff is fun. Been surfing Google maps for decades in Asia, EU, and North America. It’s easy way to find; a nearby winery while you are tramping across France visiting customers, or that obscure wood working tool store in Japan, or a saw mill along your travels though some land with forests. :-)

PPS – Have visited Belleau forest monument. My long deceased father brought home some WWII souvenirs collected from a German officer from the nearby town of Château-Thierry. Only sorry I can’t help further.

Best Luck!

-- I'm an engineer not a woodworker, but I can randomly find useful tools and furniture inside a pile of lumber!

Thank you John.
It was very humbling, getting to read and dig deeper into the history behind this.
It was very rewarding.
