...Mainly because I spend so much time watching! I’m constantly impressed with the creativity and skills exhibited in the videos by craftsmen like Rex Krueger, Paul Sellers, Young Je, John Heisz, and many others, and I’ve gleaned lots of workshop techniques, tips, tricks and project ideas that have made my shop time more enjoyable. And (although it seems to irritate the wife even more) I’ve often said that if YT had been available 20 yrs ago I would be a much better craftsman today!

My wife has not complained, but I see myself, and the world around me with our faces stuck in our phones or tablets. So I deactivated my Facebook account a couple weeks back because I spend to much time reading a stupid memes.
I do better at managing you tube, and Lumberjocks. But Facebook had to go!
I get mad at myself over the time I was spending with that dam phone.
OK, my Rant for the day is done. Time to head to the shop.

Tell your wife its educational TV. lol.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who hates youtube, albeit for different reasons.

Well, I have a youtube channel that I’m trying to build (Handlebar Workshops, if you’re interested), but I’ve pretty much sworn off Facebook, too. It always got me too angry.

In an effort to build my youtube channel, I joined Instagram. I’ve found that I can curate what I see on Instagram much easier by being very selective in who and what to follow. I can catch up on a day’s worth of Instagram in 10 minutes and all I see are beautiful timber frame homes, other woodworkers creations, some exquisite guitars, and a very few select women in bikinis. No political BS, no haters, and no negativity.

I find when I do something now, even if I have done it before I go to YouTube and search whatever it is I am going to do, to see if there is anything different than how I would do it. I can claim to do a lot of different things in the shop. I do not start with saying the way I do it is best. YouTube often shows another way to do something, and I am never to old to learn, change or adapt. I would search LJ’s or even a few other places, but YouTube has a for real search apparatus, rather than the let’s play search feature that so many places have.

To just go there with no plan on what it is you want to see, that can end up losing you some time. I once had a Faceplant account, quickly walked away from that. Does anyone ever really delete anything there? I have never tried all the other “social” places, but then I am a dinosaur. I actually use my cell phone to place, and receive phone calls.

I hate Facebook….!! Nothing of interest on there for me. I had an account a couple of years back, and I found that people abuse the privilege of having it. My son and his family, my daughter and her family are on there all the time posting crap that no one cares about….especially me. They are always nagging me to get back on Facebook so “we can keep in contact, and you can see pictures we post of the grandkids, etc.” Not interested…!! I don’t do social media much, but I do like YouTube….I watch a lot of different demonstrations on bass fishing techinuqes, such as how to……..? Since I’m a bass fisherman, and fish some tournaments, that’s where my interest lies….!! Not so much on woodworking shows.

My wife uses Faceplant for work, and a little leisure. It seems to cause her a lot of stress. Hardly a week passes when she is showing me some ignorant Mommy showing pictures of little XXXYZZ standing at the school bus stop, then the dolt will post what her kids safe word is, the time they are at the stop. It’s like they want them abducted by a Kiddie Kreep. It’s internet for people who can’t “consider”

Scott. I had mine to my ear in a store talking to the Wife trying to figure what it was she wanted me to get. Some guy half my age right after I told her bye…...

Gee I didn’t know they made transistor radios still, what are ya listening to???

The look on his face was dead serious. I’m sure I looked like the village idiot, standing looking at him with my WT???? look…

Consider building something she’s been wanting for around the house.

I like youtube but it’s gone downhill with google.

Facebook is the best worst thing ever invented. On one hand I’ve been able to reconnect with people I would never otherwise would have been able to, but on the other hand I’ve learned that about 90% of people I know are idiots and about 20% are intolerant assholes who value their worldview built on fakenews more than an actual friendship. It also facilitates the spread of misinformation and is a platform for foreigners to manipulate Americans. I use FB to follow about 5 people out of the hundreds on my list and I follow a few hobbyist groups.

My FB account is and always has been dormant. I only have it to see what my kids and grands are up to. FB is the dumbest app ever. For that matter, smartphones are a close second. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing parents in a restaurant using them and their kids left to amuse themselves. My family tries at family gatherings, but momma explodes. She put a basket on the front porch with a sign saying deposit all phones here. On the other hand, YT is loved by both of us. I love to see peoples creations and methods of doing and repairing things. Every time my shop equipment needs repair, YT has the answer. I have saved time and money using YT for home, shop, and boat problems.

I’m no fan of FB, either. I’ve gotten lots of project ideas from YT, some panned out well, some not. Prominent successes include the design of my router table incorporating a lift and features from numerous video, a handy portable moxon vise and a serious end vise utilizing a screw from a scaffold leveler, a rebuild of my primary workbench to incorporate a Wilton bench vise and the end vise mentioned earlier, a new cabinet base for my drillpress, and numerous jigs and accessories that make work easier, more accurate and/or more efficient.

Among those less successful ideas was a DIY 12” disk sander—it worked, but was bulky, kinda scary. I eventually scrapped it and bought a HF 6×48 belt/disk sander.
