I am looking at getting a lathe chuck for my Shopsmith 5. The Nova G3 seems to be very good and I can get the adapter.

What others should I consider and what size jaws?

I will be turning smaller things and likely less than 6”” or so like a small bowl or box with lid.

You are on the right track. With the correct adapter to fit your spindle, the Nova G3 will work fine. You can also adapt most of your turnings to the standard jaws. Wait until your projects require different jaws before investing in other jaws.

The G3 is a good chuck. Do a little shopping around because prices vary. Also you will find that the chuck with the 3 sets of jaws in a kit will be a better overall deal in the long run and you will be set for almost any size turning. The chuck usually comes with the medium jaw set so you will need to add the small set for that you want.
Also the small jaw set comes in a short version and an extended type.
