Topic tags/keywords: gear gears bevel search question

Hey all. I am really interested in making wood gears, and have found some great projects on this site. I was trying to find more information on how to make them (specifically bevel gears) but for some reason search on the site is not working. I’ve tried searching for “gears”, “bevel”, and even things I know will return results (such as “sled”) and nothing is returning.

I was wondering if I’m doing something wrong, or if someone could point me in the direction of a forum, blog, etc that this topic would be located in.

Thanks in advance.

Or his website, aptly named where he even has a gear template generator.

You read my mind I just posted an article from an old 1961 PS. Also included is a download link to a nice wooden gear clock plan and a link to Matthias’s making gears page. Here’s the link.

When I search, I find some threads using ‘wood gear’?

I experimented a while back making some wood bevel gears and posted a small blog about it here. I used the free online tool mentioned above to print templates and basically use his method for cutting them but at a 45 degree angle. I have not made anything with them so I don’t know how well they will actually work in an application, especially with any sort of significant load, but they seem to work pretty well just playing around with them (I posted a video if you want to see).

Another novel way to make gears on the table saw or router table can be found at Steve Garrisons website. He sells an inexpensive ebook but has some videos you can see that demonstrates his process.

If you use Sketchup, here’s a plugin that might help-
