Good evening.

As I have mentioned previously I am new to the woodworking community; almost a year now. As I continue to add items to my shop I continue to seek counsel from others with far more expierence than me. At my age, 57, I am trying to make good purchases. I do not have a vise and am considering the front vise by Rockler and Veritas front vise by Lee Valley. I really would like the Veritas; however, not sure if it is worth the money over the Rockler. It appears that they are both good units. Any advice on these units would be appreciated. Please let me know if there are others that I should consider as well.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Craig

Can you specify which ones? They both have a few.

If you don’t want to spend too much, I got the regular front vise from lee valley (not the Veritas branded one) and am satisfied with it. It isn’t quick release, but it holds work securely. It looks like they are $65. Making sure the face of the jaws is parallel to the bench top and that they close up at the top first is important.

Personally if I had the money I would get this
https://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/MS-VISE.XX/Milwaukee_Quick_Release_Bench_Vises_-_Made_in_USA

As i try to buy USA when possible. The other 2 options i considered for my recent bench build are the Eclipse that Paul Sellers uses
https://www.amazon.com/Eclipse-Quick-Release-Woodworking-Vise/dp/B016DNZDTU?th=1&psc=1

But I am cheap and broke so went with the Yost on Amazon that was cheap and works perfectly. No complaints

On the yost I did take 600 grit wet dry paper and wet sanded the screw and all moving parts to polish all the edges, filing first where needed. After this hour of polishing it works much smoother than when i got it. No quick release, but i usually work with 3/4 stock, sometimes 6/4 or 8/4, but that only takes maybe 4 more seconds.

Have your say...
