I have been busy turning my 24×20 garage into a woodworking shop. One of the tools I have been shopping for is a jointer.

Yesterday I was browsing Craigslist and came across this ad and thought it must be a mistake with the price or something wrong with it. I called immediately and told the guy I wanted it. It was an hour and 15 minute drive, but honestly would have driven 3 hours for it.

I may be wrong about this, but seemed like a smoking deal and even if not a steal the best deal I have found for the money. I set it up today and ran about 100bf through it, very happy with it.

Congrats on jumping on that machine, rather than spending time on the web to see if you were getting a best deal. When you see a desirable target, you must strike!

That’s a pretty sweet deal. Get the helical cutter head right away before you spend money on new blades.

Jim, I emailed within minutes of the posting, the guy even said he wasn’t expecting a response so quick. When I got there, he said he had no less than 6 emails of people wanting it. Not sure what it’s really worth, but I think $800-$1,000 isn’t unrealistic.

How much are those? I had $850 set aside and this was $500, so can spend another $350 without waiting another month.

I have that same Jointer, I like my very much. Since you got it so cheap, look for grizzly to have a sale on the byrd Heads. There is only one size that fits this jointer and I think I paid $325. for the upgrade. Never having to change knives is such a good feeling. Congrats on the new tool.

Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace are a great option for obtaining equipment at a reasonable price and it looks like you found a great jointer buy. Congrats.

I found a great condition 3hp Grizzly G0490 8” Parallelogram Bed Jointer listed for $800 and purchased it for $750 last year (new $1,419 delivered) and it was well worth the 1 hour drive to pick it up.

I also found a new Grizzly G0548Z 2hp Dust Collector w/ 1 micron canister filter for $200 last year (new $634 delivered), again well worth a 1-1/2 hr drive. He had purchased the dust collector new but before assembling he bought a larger DC at an auction so the Grizzly sat unused in the corner of his garage for a couple years until he needed the space for something else. He had it listed for $250 but when we got there, he wasn’t able to locate some of the unassembled parts, so while he was looking, I made sure the parts were available ($40 delivered) and he ended up knocking off $50 from the asking price.

In fairness, I have also missed out on a few great buys at times and you quickly learn that finding the best items at the best price requires frequent searching, a broad search area and to act quickly when something appears. I had both of the above items in my shop within hours of when just a few hours of when they were posted and they have performed superbly. Granted there are some things online that I would very much stay away from, but with diligence, some great deals are there to be found.
