I am looking for some wide water activated gummed veneer tape to use in veneering projects. I looked on the web but could only fine the standard 3/4’’ that I use and have. Anyone know of a good source or could recommend?

Thanks

What are you using it for?

To cover the back of veneer panels that have multiple pieces to keep them intact. Also to be used to stabilize veneer when cutting fragile stock.
Or something wider than 3/4’’.

I thought it might be for reinforcement. It is a lot more expensive than newspaper and HHG and I find that when I use it to save a bit of time it doesn’t work as well either.
Lots of people use masking tape for assembly although I prefer mounting boards with french kraft paper.

You’ve been to ASFM, right?

To actually answer your question, I bought some ~2” I think from Paul Schurch’s website years ago. I don’t use it much though for the above reason.

Paul thanks for the lead. As far as the hide glue with paper yes that works well but to heat the glue and such can be a time problem and to set up the glue pot in not something I like to do for different things. Masking tape works well for a lot of things but when cutting it is harder to cut and if you leave tape on to long it has a tendency to not come off and damage the veneer, especially in the thinner fragile veneers. Also I am not wanting it for assembly but more for stabilizing burls and such.
I know that Paul Schurch’s has shut down his site and not selling product like he used to.

I agree. I would never use masking tape for reinforcing for cutting. It’s easy for me as I have HHG on all day every day in the shop. It only takes a few minutes and it stays put better than veneer tape.
