What would be the definition of “luck”? Washing will certainly not improve the filtering ability of the bag. In fact, it will degrade it significantly. Filter bags in general don’t work well until they develop a cake of residue internally that improves the filtering process. The trick is to clean the bag often enough to maintain air flow but not thoroughly enough to reduce the filtering ability too much. When I used bags, I shook them out when they got clogged and then used compressed air judiciously to clean them further. If you do this, be sure to wear a mask to keep the dust fog out of your lungs.

+1 still using a bag, when I think of it while changing the bottom bag, I’ll beat the cloth bag a bit with a stick to help drop as much as I’m patient for into the bottom bag. I did remove and go as far from the house as the air hose would permit once, and did wear my respirator, but afterwards wished I had one of those tyvek crime scene zip up coverall suits… dust was everywhere

A lot of them (especially the felt bags) specifically warn against washing. Like Art said, some of the dust cake is part of the filtering system on them. I’d skip the washing part and stay with the dry methods of maintaining them.

Thank you everyone. I think I’ll take the bag outside and beat the snot, I meant dust out of it.

Have your say...
