I am doing a small box project and I have used birdseye maple and want to tint the wood a nice blue. I bought some transtint dyes. So I am looking for some does and dont’s before I start. I have some scraps set aside too to test. I then want to coat with a gloss lacquer. Any pointers are welcome. Thanks.

How dark do you want to tint it? I use mineral spirits to apply my tints with. If they have instructions with them use those as a guide. I have found that transtint dyes to go on darker than they say they do in the instructions. So use a test piece for sure. Birdseye maple takes dyes ans stain well but less so than the clear maples do.
My $.02anyway.
