Very new to woodworking, but I have a few of my grandpas tools and want to learn, anyways I’m wondering if you can really make anything from a christmas tree, standard 5 or 6 feet tall, maybe 5 or 6 inches wide at the base.

I just thought it’d be a cool thing to make every years tree, start a tradition, but I don’t know how to go about milling something that small or how to mill, or if you can even get more than a long stick out of it.

Any suggestions of making anything from a small pine tree?

“Anything” is pretty broad. So. Yes. You could probably make something. Your problem is that the wood from a Christmas tree trunk is be quite wet and will do a lot of shrinking and consequent splitting. What you will be able to make would probably be in the realm of carving small objects or turning small vessels.

The trunk off of the standard-issue is garbage by the standard of most scenarios: small, soft, knotty, and (as noted above) pretty wet. I’ve asked myself the same question posed by the OP, not because the trunk is a lumber bonanza but because of the sentimental connection. As such I’ve saved a few trunks and processed them for air-drying: tiny little saw mill and drying operation!

I’ve been too busy elsewhere to give much thought to what I’ll eventually do but there are two leading options: minature buildings, as in a model of a country church, and the other is a frame for a picture ornament for the tree. So, either a little display piece for the mantel from Christmases past or a family Christmas-day pic framed by that year’s tree and itself living on as a ornament on next year’s tree.

I wouldn’t mess with wood from a Christmas tree. The sap will gum up your tools, especially saw blades. Just not worth it.
