Hello all, I am new to the site and just getting into wood working. I picked up a Craftsman jointer (113.232211) last night for free. Fence and Tables are not warped and came with extra knives. When i turn the jointer on, the motor just hums, I adjusted the belt tension and the same issues, if I take the belt off and turn it on the motor fired up with out issue(cutting head and motor both turn freely). My experience with working on appliances makes me ASSUME it is a bad capacitor. Has anyone had this issue and is there anything else I should look into. Also like i said the jointer was free so I am currently not out any money and I do like the way the older machines look vs new. That being said I am expecting to need a new motor but I am just looking for more insight. Thank you |

Check the voltage. If wired for 220, could behave that way. -- David in Palm Bay - retired and loving it! |

Look for the little contacts on centrifugal switch . They probably just need a bit of cleaning or swarf blown out. If that’s a jointer with a fixed out feed table it’s worth about what you paid for it 0. -- Aj |

Well I took the motor out to check the switch turns out it was packed with saw dust, I cleaned it all out put it back together and it works… I have no problem setting up a table so having a fixed output table is not an issue for me… Took about 20 minutes to set up the new knives, and that was my first time so should not take as long next time… I guess might not be worth it to you, but to each their own … |

As far as I know all jointers have a fixed outfeed table. The infeed adjusts for cutting depth, and the Fence adjusts for angle. Simple, If anyone knows of a jointer with a adjustable outfeed table, it would be nice to know. |

The only thing I don’t love about my jointer is how the fence attaches, but… Hey it works |

My 4” Rockwell has an adjustable outfeed table, but it rarely needs adjustment. As noted, most adjustments are done with the infeed. -- Phil Allin - There are mountain climbers and people who talk about climbing mountains. The climbers have "selfies" at the summit! |

I assume adjustable outfeed is to compensate for knife wear? Or maybe it just makes it easier to set the blades? My Atlas has a fixed outfeed as well and it’s never been an issue for me. -- Kenny, SW VA, Go Hokies!!! |

You should always look for a jointer with adjustable outfeed. -- Aj |

I have owned 4 different jointers, each one a different brand. Everyone had adjustable out feed tables. Why is the outfeed table on a jointer adjustable? John Brock: So it can be set to the height of the cutters and eliminate snipe. Richard Jones: To make fine adjustments so as to get the surface of that table tangent to the cutting circle described by the cutters in the cutter block. Carol Reed: As you sharpen cutters you will find that you may need to adjust the outfeed table to align with them. -- Alaskan's for Global warming! |
