Hi All,

I was given 4 slabs of walnut from a friend. They are still live edge and 3 are 2 inch thick before planing, one is 1.5” and one is thin.

I am having trouble coming up with a design for a nice floating mantel shelf. I see a lot of faux beam looking shelves but was hoping to find some ideas of things a little more designed. Anyone have any thoughts on what would look nice? I don’t want to burn through the wood and be unhappy with a rectangular box I put on the fireplace.

Thanks in advance and any ideas or pointers are greatly appreciated.

Ryan

So here is the shelf. Just planed it down. Still need to chop the left hand off. Left it on there for snipe. I was thinking of putting a small 4×4” box under it but then I put it up like this and kind of like it. New question: would you add corbels? I have never made them and not sure how they would turn out.

Thanks for any opinions. Beginner here.
