A friend made me a bench for our back entry area. The idea is to have beadboard, hooks, and shelf above it. The bench has a board behind where the lid will be (on the same plane). What options would I have to hinge this?

Depends what you want the hinge to do. Just hinge, hinge and lock, hinge and hold? some would be mounted on that back lip, and the seat, others on a side wall, to the seat.

Just hinge, this would be fine.

Depending on weight of door these may hinge, and lock/hold

If there is worry that tiny hands could get trapped between case and the door/lid.

Other similar will be found under searches for “hope chest hinges” and things like that.

Piano hinges are commonly used in this application if the concerns that therealSteveN brought up are of little consideration for you.
