Topic tags/keywords: finish maple color

I am looking for a curly maple blank to use for a center column for a traditional tea table. I want to use a solid piece and not a glue up. My intent is to use a dark stain of some type so it fits in with the rest of the finishes in our living room.

I have a chance at some 16/4 stock, but was cautioned that it is not all white. Does this matter given that I want to use a darker stain?

Thanks for any help,

My experience with staining Maple was not fun. Splotching was a problem. Finally figured out how to do it using a water based stain. Be sure you have a lot of scrap or extra wood to test out stains. Get Charles Neil’s stain controller. That’s what saved me. Be patient.

You should use a dye on a highly figured wood like curly maple, not a stain. As Kirk650 says, use some scrap to experiment. Experimentation is key. I bought a bunch of quarter- sawn white oak for a tool chest I built. For the main part of the chest, stain worked just great. But I had some other species of white oak that I bought a bunch of that took stain and ended up looking terrible. It looks just great with a shellac finish, though. That grain popped like a big dog!
