Hello to everyone here,

My name is Eric and I am new here on the site. Also I recently relocated to Upstate South Carolina, warmer climate.

Working on a design for a shop, hoping to break ground in the Spring and have it up and running by Summer. Building process will not be a issue for me due to the fact that I am a carpenter.

The shop is going to be a supplement income down the road. That retirement life is waiting.

Either way any ideas around here of small items that sell well, toys, boxes, ect. Open for any ideas. Thank you.

Are there any of you here on the site that live near the Northwest corner of South Carolina? Just wondering, looking to meet other folks with the same interest in woodworking. Thanks.

Can’t answer your questions, but Welcome to LJ!!!

I’m a hobby woodworker and never sell my stuff, but from what I’ve read on this and other sites, what sells varies widely across the country, season, venue, and time. You might check out what is selling locally and in a venue similar to where you intend to sell to get some clues on what is the “next big thing”.

Thanks for the note. Here is a short list of projects I have done in the past

Entertainment center (2) out of cherry
Desk for the kids
Toy boxes
Two sided easel for the kids
Candel holders, both sitck and votief
Wedding boxes, to hold the couple’s cards, then as a keepsakes. One of those was a lighthouse about 3 1/2’ tall
Boxes to mount a coffee grinder on. I still have about 10 grinders left ( guess I need to get busy )
Tinkered with a few boat models, built to scale. A dream I have is to build one I can sail.

Most of the items were as gifts either for the kids or family members. The cabinets were for the house.

I did have an interesting project a few years back. A client of mine wanted a window repaired. I ended up rebuilding it. This window was for a gable end of an old farm house. The kicker is, it was 7’ (w) x 3’ (h) in a diamond shape with 25 pains of glass. I ended up glazzing the last pain in after I reinstalled the window.

Guess I rambled on enough here.

Welcome to LJ. Are you looking at doing this full-time, or just as a way to sell what you decide you’d enjoy making?

Would like to get into it full time. And be my own boss again. But moving to a new area I have to establish my name, and that may take some time. So the full time would be down the road if things work out good.

It took me about three years to get my name around with painting and remodel work up in New York. But once it did I was turning down work. And all of that just by word of mouth.

I need to figure out what will sell in this area, and expand on that.

Joe, thanks for the welcome

I am up in Walhalla, been here for a year now. Moved here for the warmer climate. And I have been enjoying it. Just bit to hot the past few days working in the sun, ha ha

welcome, Eric

you could start with a few small items that are easily reproduced
and open a retail store on Etsy or Ebay to start with just to get your
feet wet in the business world. check the retail laws for SC as for
what local and state taxes you have to collect on your products and services.
[in the meantime, you could purchase a “Home Occupation” license
just to become established in the neighborhood, if one is required].
Many of us here started out only as a hobby. and as our skills and
confidence grew, so did the business.
what type of business did you have before ?

wishing you all the best in the coming New Year.

Welcome Eric, I recently moved from Seneca to Boiling Springs after a prior 20+ years in Ohio so I’m familiar with Walhalla. I too moved south for warmer weather, the lower taxes and paved roads (what Ohio considered pavement didn’t quite match my definition) were just added bonuses.
