Pretty new to woodworking and VERY new to forest ownership.

So, I have 40 acres of mixed hardwoods. Mainly white oak, red oak, sugar maple and red maple with some ash, aspen, white pine and paper birch.

This is a 14” to 16” diameter white oak with a very large (36” or so at widest point) diameter burl. What is the correct way to cut this beast for the best looking boards?

Seems like I have seen this picture before.

I took this picture yesterday, so, no…it has not been shown before.

I recently purchased 40 acres of mixed hardwoods as a place to build for retirement. I had a state DNR forester come in and he recommended thinning the forest as it is too dense. We plan on select cutting the forest and there are several trees with burl like this. Any that are will have the burl salvaged for personal use instead of being sent to a mill.

the burls ive had were simply sliced off flush to the trunk,i then cut them into whatever i needed, pen blanks, some was made into vaneer, one large one i had about 30”in diameter and 1-1/2” thick i made into a table top.if you look at my projects you can see it.but it all depends on what you plan to do with it.

Table tops was a plan.
