How well would a mortising attachment work on this drill press and how well would the drill/mortising attachment work vs a stand-alone mortiser of equal HP?

Drill is 1 hp, I have a larger drill press table with fence built on it.

I tried that, and found it a disappointing experience. The problem isn’t the DP’s horsepower—you’re usually not driving more than a 1/2” auger (often less) into the wood—it’s the insufficient downward force you can impart to the chisel. Also, the kit I used had inadequate hold downs for when you withdraw the mortising chisel. Very frustrating.

Actually, that last part is typical even of dedicated mortisers. I modified mine (Delta bench top) with toggle clamps which helped a lot.

-- I admit to being an adrenaline junky; fortunately, I'm very easily frightened

That was what I’m kinda gathering from the WWW, it’s good to hear more qualified input here. Thank you.
