I just purchased an old Rabbet Plane that is similar to a Stanley #78. I only has none marking on it. Just ahead of the handle on the left side, it says “Made in USA”
On the direct opposite side the body is checkered with a non checkered “Oval” portion within. On some Millers Falls # 85 planes, it is stamped in that non checkered oval with “Millers Falls #85”. This one has nothing.

Any ideas on this one?

Any markings on the iron? Could be that yours is one made for another company/seller.
Clean it up and use it. They work well if set up properly.

I plan on it. The rod the fence rides on is bent, but that can be straightened. Everything is there so I’m not missing any parts.
I got it, a Stanley #51 Spoke shave and a Bailey #3 for $80
the Bailey has a broken Frog and a missing lever cap, so whoever had it put a small block of wood on top of the chip breaker and uses the existing screw t hold it in place. It actually works.

Nothing on the iron? It was probably made for a house brand such as Craftsman or Wards.

I agree that it was probably sold through either Sears or Ward’s. They sold a lot of stuff by Miller’s Falls as their own brands. These usually are really good planes in use.

My #78 is a Stanley made plane…iron is stamped as a WARDS MASTER QUALITY…

Pattern on the handle of the OP’s LOOKS like a Millers Falls style. Depth stop bolt MAY have been a replacement, mine has a shouldered thumbscrew. Same thing with the fence bolt. Mine there is also a thumbscrew. .Depth adjust lever is either been bent, or is a non-Stanley pattern.

Millers Falls tended to do almost a direct copy of Stanley planes….

Pattern along the top of the OP’s plane is different than a Stanley made version, as well.

Photos of mine, to compare with the OP’s plane…

Note the end of the depth adjuster lever. Iron has Wards Master Quality

Close?

Hmmm.. was told a long time ago, if the handle has a dimpled texture, it was by Stanley

May want to look up what handle Millers Falls used?

if it’s a Millers Falls the fence rood will be a standard thread size.

Close, but not quite the same one…. The texturing of the handle appears to be a little different.

Thanks for everyone’s input.

I’m gonna clean it up and either straighten the fence rod, or get another one that is straight.

It will be a good plane!!
