So shop time has been very limited since my boy was born 3 months ago, but we decided we needed something to keep my sons keepsakes in. I’ve built this simple box, cherry, olive wood lid, with maple splines. The problem is that it looks like an urn! I can assure you that baby is alive and well, but I’m not sure how to “soften it” without starting again.
The way I see it, the proportions are off, depth to width and thickness of the sides, also the lettering is too formal. Does anyone have any suggestions I’m going to add his weight under his birthday, maybe some banding or VERY simple inlay

Easily just get some colorful paint and a thin paintbrush paint the routed writing. It will make it look less urn like. Btw that’s a good looking box

Yes to the paint. Have Mom hand paint a small grape vine up the corner(s) and slap your son’s paw print on top. It will be a keepsake for a good century or more. OBTW – You did sign and date the bottom (or inside the lid?). Though gone for 25 years, finding my Dad’s signature on something he did is truly a treasure.

Very nice box. Doesn’t look at all like an urn to me but some of the above suggestions would remove all doubt. You’re gonna need a bigger box! :-)

It’s the initials and date that make it look “urn” like. It even looks tombstone like. I would eliminate it. Although it is a very nice looking box, it would look better in the kitchen as a bread box. I would change the top to look more like a toy box and paint it in a colorful motif; maybe some juvenile stickers. It’s too formal looking.

Thanks gents, I think I’m going to add birthweight and get his mum to add some brightly coloured painting. Make it from both of us.
It’s 7×15 and 9inchs high, I carved “love Dad” on the back.
The next box for him I s going to be a chest!
