I currently have the kreg jr. and have used it off and on for several years.

I’m starting a project tomorrow, building a large dog kennel furniture piece for a client. I thought about using my biscuit joiner BUT sometimes alignment is a pain.

The Kreg Jr is cool but manually clamping is also tedious for several pieces.

So, it’s now between the kreg k4, k5, or the Porter Cable quick jig.

The quick jig seems to have the best reviews BUT it something I’ll have to order and it’s $150 roughly. I was surprised how old it is without a new model.

I can pickup a brand new K4 locally for $65 with a box of screws. Not bad. Saw a hack to swap out the clamp and add an auto adjust clamp from rockler for like $30.

Or spend the $150 and get the k5 master kit, only one that’s local.

I can probably make the dog kennel with the kreg jr but man would it be faster and more accurate with a the k4 or k5.

Any thoughts?

I second the k5. Worth the extra money. I would mount it on a plywood base or make a station and kept all the clampes screws together

After some research, I’m finding that Porter Cable quickjig 560 is hard to find. Menards has some in stores on the east coast and lists it as ‘discontinued’ with only a few left. Wonder if a new model is coming out.

I do like the not having to adjust the drill bit depth on the Porter Cable. I’m not production so it’s really not that big of a deal.

Can’t comment on the Porter Cable, but I can comment on the K5. I love the front mounted clamp mechanism which makes drilling a breeze. The dust collection is 100% perfect too. You do have to adjust for each thickness of wood, but it’s very quick and easy to adjust with all the tools in the wings of the K5. I also second screwing it down to a piece of plywood so you can clamp it down in a vise so you can just fly through all the drilling. Plus if you ever need support from Kreg, they are by far one of the best in the industry. My 2 cents.
