So I purchased 7 Bookshelves this weekend for the wood and I am kind of lost on what kind of wood it is. When I purchased them I thought they were oak but now that I have sanded and Cut a piece I am not totally sure. 1st picture is a piece of Oak and Walnut with the question mark piece on top. The second picture is of the question pieces end grain. Thanks for any help.

Mahogany of some description.

Both walnut and mahogany have a distinct smell.

Could be Lauan. I’ve bought desk/shelving units at auction before that were made of this stuff. Seems popular for furniture made in S.A. or Mexico.

I’ve never seen Lauan in dimensional lumber from a commercial source but I think I agree with Splinter that it really looks like it. I think Lauan is a related species to mahogany also.

Either way, if the lumber is in your shop, make something cool out of it and be proud!
