Topic tags/keywords: door glass circular saw douglas fir power tools question

Hi all,

I just got a new exterior door from Home Depot that’s a “full light” design, meaning there’s a roughly 6×2.5 foot single pane of glass surrounded by doug fir rails and stiles. Naturally, despite measuring, t’s about an inch to tall for the opening. Do you think using a circular saw to trim off the bottom is safe or would the vibration shatter the glass?

Thanks for you input!

your circular saw will create way less vibration than someone slamming
the door once it is installed….... cut it – don’t worry.

I “fixed” a door that a friend mismeasured with no problems. They always use tempered glass in doors so you’re safe.

Exactly. When cutting put on sawhorses and try not to bear down, let the saw do the work. A good habit regardless if it has glass or not.

I would guess it’s probably tempered glass. If so, anything short of a hammer is gonna have a hard time breaking it.
