I spent most of the morning struggling with my DIY dust collector. It is a 4” system made of parts from Menards. The problem is the blast gates. The gate slides in a body that is closed at the bottom. Sawdust collects in this closed end and wont let the gate close all the way. I sawed the end off and now the dust can fall out when you close the gate. The gate has no brand name, just “Made in Taiwan”. Sold at Menards. Maybe this will solve issues some of you are having.

I have mine installed sideways so I’m thinking that yours are not. Is that so? larry

Your projects are quite nice and the wood is free or next to it. Ya can’t beat that! larry

I feel your pain. I used to use those plastic ones—tried different things to keep them clean (drilling holes, etc).

I finally bite the bullet and converted to the aluminum blast gates from Woddcraft:

I will never go back.

You really need gates where the slide goes all the way through or you get dust buildup at the closed end.
There are tons of instructions on how to build your own on the web Here’s a video of just one: Blast Gates
