I was down at one of the local supply houses picking up some country maple (they call it here a soft brown maple) i’ve been using it for lots of things, a couple treasure chests, and hope chests, boards, ect.

any way, as they normally do not tender exotics, they had closed one of their stores in cali, and well they had pallets of multiple what i call exotics, so as i was waiting on the old boy to bring me a pallet of maple to peruse, another worker was pulling pallets off a truck and i spied some dark wood, that peaked my interest, as the boys all know me since i’m there a bit, and one day i did bring pizza, ehhe, it pays to be kind to the boys who do the work.

anyhow, one of the office pukes came out, and told me all about the load, and they were discounting hugely.

So i pulled what i thought was wenge, about a dozen 1×6 x mostly 8ft, and what i discovered was afromosia, in any event, i pulled almost a dozen of each, almost all in decent shape, a couple had some wanky stuff going on, but hey ok,
fella came out and said. ” i gotta charge you 6 bucks a board foot, well if you know what wenge costs, and afromosia, at least here, its running around 20 bucks a bf. so i said. ” wow” and tried to make it convincing,
sached into the office and paid for my total order, all the while trying to hold in my giggle, and office boy was glad to be rid of it, and again apologized for the high price.

i advised its usually a bit more, but they didn’t seem to care,
i giggled the 15 mile trip home, texting my wood working buddy of the good fortune,

hehe, then friday got a call from the office boy, and said they found some more and if i wanted they’ hold it for me, a small hesitation and i of course said “hell yeah, be down monday

first for me on a deal of wood of this magnatude, think i’ll buy a lottery ticket and blow all my luck at once.

Sounds like a deal to me! (but that wenge sure can ruin your day with those splinters…)

Exotic hunting can be a fun game since many places/people don’t know what a particular wood actually is.

I got some 2×4 pieces of ebony for free that someone was chocking a tractor wheel with (all covered with dried mud).

Checking the “small lot” discount board at local flooring shops can often score you some teak or jatoba for a few bucks/sq.ft.

Wow! RJ that is a real find, and good on the store mgrs. for giving you that savings … The only stores I know of around here are Woodworkers Source and Rockler … Whom do you go to???
Again a great find, you get the ‘rusty beer can award’ for the best find of the day.

McKillican’s, used to be American hardwood, i bought pretty deep back in the day when i had the cabinet shop, while their business plan has changed, i still get awesome bf prices on walnut, cherry, maple, and last time they had some absolutely beautiful mahogany, ribbon in it was unbelieable.
its rare if they have any thing i consider exotic, stuff from outta the country, they do have some good prices, on domestic, beats rockler and wws to to death.

if you really want some special wood, there is a little joint over on like 51st ave and camelback maybe, i’ll find their website and info and post it when i get home, but they have a lot of live edge, and just off the wall wood, from all over, prices arent too bad, i picked up a gaggle of spalted alder, had never seen it before, but it sure is soft and purdy.

happy sunday
