I’ve been checking the Grizzly site since Christmas and the 8” Helical Head jointers have been on perpetual backorder. I haven’t called the company yet ( I suppose that would be the first step but.. ) If they tell me it will be months before I can get a Grizzly then what other options should I consider. I get the impression that the other manufacturers are basically selling a Chinese made Grizzly with different paint, switches and knobs and wanting $300 to $500 dollars more than Grizzly. Is it a known fact or speculation that these tools are all made in 2 or 3 factory’s with very minor differences. Used 8” machines are a rare bird on my Atlanta Craigslist. Any feedback will be appreciated.

JET and Powermatic are a couple alternatives. Both of their jointers are made in Taiwan and are very good machines.

Check with someone like Utterguys out of Florida or go on the Woodstock International website and take a look at the Steelex and Shop Fox branded units. They’re both basically Grizzly machines and Woodstock International is owned by the same man who owns Grizzly. These two brands are made for retail/online sales from other companies. Generally speaking, the Shop Fox version of a similar model to Grizzly tends to be a little higher end with a couple extra bells and whistles added.

When Grizzly was out of their 2 HP hybrid tablesaw, I bought the Shop Fox version from and got a machine with an extra extension table. Utterguys had them in stock and I received it fairly quickly. Some links:

Shop Fox 9” jointer:

Utterguys links to each jointer. You can email them for available stock if they’re reasonably close to you, they’re in Florida, I am in Georgia, so they’re a good fit. Their response to inquiries was quick. They also offer a couple other Pacific Rim brands:
