Reason like these videos because the emphaiss on MC at the start and goal of what MC has to be for the area when finished turning. Using both moisture meter and scale to achieve end result.

A moisture meter is a nice to have item whether pin or pin less or combination of both. While both type meters have advantages & disavantages most consumer MM’s will get you in the ball park for area you live. Depending up size of wood turners use scales anything from bathroon, kitchen, or postal sizes. Got along just fine for years without a MM or scales, but probably would have shorten learning curve. Do have a consumer grade General MM from Lowes which works just fine.

Like to draw attention to fig 13-1 Frying & control MC & Dimensional Chart and Table 13-2 Recommended MC values for various wood products at time of installation on page 5 of the reference.

Like William Hunt from the video don’t really care for microwave drying or boiling wood procedure. I perefer to air dry after rough turnings. In the past did turn green wood bowls 3/16” to 1/4” uniform thickness and alow to air dry. I do believe get less cracks on my hollow from turning to 1/4” uniform thickness with aide of home made lazer pointer set up regardless of size. On bowls just want a uniform thickness, wall sizes will vary based upon depth and dimameter. Have turned many spindle projects from start to finish with less than 16 to 20% MC.

Lots of interesting data.
I have never used microwave drying because I am too lazy.
Heat it, take it out, heat it, take it out. heat….
I want a smart microwave. Set it for a 30 second blast every 30 minutes and let ‘er go. Check the next day.
I do use a moisture meter but no scales. I just poke them in the base right through the bag; under 14% ready to re-turn for me.

Like said in previous post a moisture meter is a nice to have item. Got along just fine without one for years. There is a small learning curve whether pin or pin less or combo meter.

Most consumer grade meters may be useless on a freshly cut down tree due to percentage of moisture present unless taking down a dead tree. Sealing the ends and storing for few months until moisture content down to FSP (fiber saturation point) or between 28 or 30 percent MC.

That doesn’t stop you from rough turning thin or to uniform thickness based upon diameter & depth.

When turning thin strange things can happen but not all bad. Lot depends upon wood species and where you live. I had great luck turning thin and sanding & finishing a bowl in couple days. After setting aside after finishing they would morp into interesting shapes. Think was very lucky lost very few due cracking. Lost a few on the lathe due to going back over already thin parts of the bowl.

Long after stopped turning thin found this article online and like to link it because covers just about everything there is to it. Once turn dozen or more thin bowls got old and traditional bowls became the norm for me. Some times just have to go thin just to see if can!

Your post reminded me that I bought a moisture meter and have no idea what I did with it. I really need to build a bigger tool box.
