Standing dead maple in my backyard. I kept the nicer bits. I hoped to see a little spalting.

What should I do with it? My best idea so far has been to just stare at it.

One of these days I’m gonna open a thread like this and get pranked pretty hard…

In the meantime, it’s a nice looking hunk of wood you have there. Dimensions?

I like to stare at crotches too. Totally not weird at all.

You could always resaw it and do a book matched epoxy pour table. They are all the rage these days.

It’s about 5’ long and 26” at the split end, 22 at the butt.

I don’t know anyone with a saw big enough for that. I’ll have to put on CL and see who’s got the big wood shop around.

Nice crotch. It’s alder by the way.

Awesome! Thanks. I don’t think I ever worked with alder before. I never saw the tree alive, but we have a few maples so I thought it was the mother tree.

It is definitely NOT alder. It’s some sort of running joke here. You were right with maple.

Are the sections pictured already in boards? How long ago was it sawn?

If it was box Elder it could be a firecrotch.

In that case, I’d sticker / stack them and give them a year+ (depending on thickness) to dry. That’ll give you plenty of time to figure out exactly what to do with them :)

In the meantime though, thanks for sharing – We love crotchs pics

I’d suggest putting it on a lounge chair by the pool…
