I’ve been looking for some hand planes. Saw on ad on C-list Friday Morning for a Bailey No. 7 plane and called and begged him to hold it for me until I could pick it up today.

While I was there, he showed me a number 6 Union plane that he had never gotten arount to restoring…so I picked up a nice project plane as well…and I got what I thought was a pretty good deal.

Now I need a No. 3 and a No 5 and I’ll be good…until I find something else I want!

Here’s the No. 7

And here is the 6.

I am very excited!

Those will get you started!

I started with a no 4 someone here had restored, and a block plane I found at a local shop and restored myself. I just picked up a Sargent 418 (no 6 size) off Ebay. All I need is a No 1 and a No 2 and I’ll have a whole set of the bailey style.

It can become an addiction!

Well the thing is…they are beautiful tools. I can see why people collect them.

You’re right about that. If I decide to fill those in I will buy new. Wood river and LN make a no 1, and LN makes a no 2. And though it wouldn’t seem like it makes sense to those newer on the scene, new LN planes in that size are way cheaper than vintage. Vintage planes in that size are exceedingly rare and fetch several hundred to low thousands for a nice No1.
