Hi,

I just joined the site today.

I’m building a king size platform bed for my wife and I. I’ve been tossing around a couple ideas to circumvent the center leg.

Here are the three options that I’ve come up with:

1. Center beam with slats and plywood

2. Dual center beams with slats plywood.

3. No center beam with full length “T” shaped sprung jointed slats (perpendicular hardwood boards) and plywood.

Please share how you tackled this.

Thanks,

Tripp

I’m having a hard time picturing #3.

What’s the objection to having a leg in the center?

I designed and built both a King and Queen version of a platform bed. We elected to incorporate 2 huge pull out drawers and a small door / cubby per bed side to utilize all of the otherwise wasted space under the bed. Basically there are 2 platforms or cabinet carcasses which provide excellent structure and support for the plywood to lay on for the “platform bed” while functionally being used as drawer/cabinet walls.

For the King size you also get a free center section that is covered with slats and accessible via a door at the footboard. Good area for hiding / storing very long items.

We’ve had nothing but rave reviews / people wanting me to build them one since you cannot really find this on the market and if you did it’s way too costly.

Enjoy the design & build journey !

Hi Jonah,

See attached for #3.

As for the center leg, I would like to have full storage capability underneath the bed. I’ll probably end up with one, but I’d like to hear about different arrangements to displace weight across 78” gap.
