Trying to find someone with experience with the HF DC, Rikon Impeller, SDD XL or 5” and Wynn Filter Mod. As I stated in thiis thread, lumberjocks.com/topics/266737, I am ready to put it all together. The only thing I haven’t quite figured out is the best way to run the ducting.

Those who have done this mod, are you using 5 or 6 inch ducts? How ling are your runs? Are you starting at a larger and dropping as you ge further from the DC? Anyone with experience with this setup, please send me some info about your system performance.

Also,
if anyone has the SDD XL, how is your performance with this setup?

Thanks,
Roger

I am on my way to that setup so I’ve done a lot of looking into it. I currently have the HF DC and a Wynn filter, next step is a pre-separator and the Rikon impeller. As for the pre-separator, I plan to do a thien baffle top hat because it’s the cheapest, most effective option. The SDD is better. Note that users report up to a 50% drop in flow, but it’s separation efficiency is high, the highest of your options short of a finely tuned custom cyclone. There are flow suggestions for each one. I’m not planning on going the SDD route (at least for now) so I don’t know off the top of my head, but if memory serves me right, the fully tricked-out HF DC puts flows and pressures somewhere right between the two SDD units – low for the 6” version, and high for the 5” version. Of the forums I’ve read, most opt for the 5” version because separation relies on the velocity of the air to get all the fines out of the air stream – better to have your flows on the higher end than the lower end. At least that’s what I’ve read and people with this setup have been happy with it.

That being said, Gray House Studio did a nice little review of their modded setup on youtube. Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v5079FPCsY&t=36s They used the XL 6” version and seem to be getting good flows and separation. Note they are not using a Wynn filter though, rather some cheapo they found elsewhere. I’m a little skeptical, like it’s letting more air through than the Wynn would, but on the other hand, they’re both oversized filters for the system so there may not be that much difference until the finer Wynn filter seasons (assuming it’s finer here, don’t know).

So that probably doesn’t help at all, but I’m having the same conundrum while I figure out if I want my Thien sized for 5” or 6”. Right now I’m leaning towards 6” though because I don’t have many vertical runs at all. I think I can get by with a little less velocity in the pipe – would rather have more flow to capture the fines at the source. But this could change by the time I get around to it.

Have your say...
