I want to see how 40 degrees will do on bowls but I don’t want to grind if I don’t have to, could I use my 3/8ths spindle gouge to see if it would work the way I want, it is already 40. I don’t want to try if it isn’t safe. This would be finish cutting not roughing or sapping

It will work well. I have two very shallow fluted bowl gouges that don’t seem to me to be too much different from a couple of my spindle gouges. With a 3/8” gouge, keep the length overhanging the tool rest to a minimum.
