Herman – what part of the country are you in ?
personally, if you need a really heavy duty bench, I would laminate the thickness required for stability.
with some advanced planning and choosing the different woods carefully, you can have a work of art
and not just a saw bench.

and the saw bench that Chris makes in this article is just plain ole BORG lumber – nothing special.

Edit:

materials list: (basically, it is common dimensional lumber)
1 Top 1-1/4” x 6-3/4” x 32” = [2×8 or 2×6 x32”]
4 Legs 1-1/4” x 2-1/2” x 21” = [2×4 x16-21”]
2 Long Stretchers 1-1/4” x 2-1/2” x 26” = [2×4 x26”]
2 Short stretchers 1-1/4” x 2-1/2” x 12” = [2×4 x12”]
