My old 2030 planer jointer started making a bad growling noise. I found a little play in the cutter head near the jointer end. My guess is a bad bearing. I did replace the rollers years ago, but I didn’t go any deeper than that. Anyone out there ever replace the cutter head bearings on one of these machines or have any advice? I think I found the parts on ReplacementParts, but I want to wait and talk to someone on the phone before I make my order.

Thanks, Smitty

One word of advice – DO NOT buy your bearings from an aftermarket supplier (like ereplacementparts, miketools, etc…) specific for the machine – unless you like getting questionable quality bearings and paying 3-4 times or more for them than you should.

Depending on how far you want to go, there are 8 bearings total that should be replaced:

You should also probably check your gearbox to see if there is still any grease left in it or if it has turned to wax.

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks Brad, I guess I’ll find this gear box when I get into it, but the diagrams are so small I can’t really see where the above parts are located.

The revised parts list from Makita is a PDF, so you should be able to enlarge it as much as you like.

Brad

Are there any videos out there that would help with this process?
