So I have been looking for a 15” Planer and there seems to be a lack of them in stock. Grizzly, Steelex, Shopfox even Woodtek don’t seem to have them. Even signed up for the email alert for the Grizzly G0453Z. Got the email but neither location shows in stock on their website. Anyone else seen this?
Not sure I want to fork out the extra money for the Jet or Powermatic. And I definitely don’t want my money tied up for months with no product available.

Somebody mentioned the Chinese government
was prioritizing metal supplies for uses other
than export products.

I’ve found used equipment very acceptable. I
know it can be difficult to persuade a seller to
ship something that heavy, but it’s not that
difficult.

Where do you live? I guess you are only looking at brand new? All of the 4 post 15” planers are very similar to each other, much like the venerable 14” Delta Band saws. Parts availability is good, and there are many used machines looking for new homes. Money can be much less than a new machine, and you could have it same day.

Just an option.

I’ve been watching Craigslist but the prices they want for a standard planer and the adding the cost of the spiral head don’t make financial sense.

The Powermatic 15HH has advantages over the similar Grizzly. I have owned both and felt the Powermatic 15HH was worth the extra money. Its the only CHINA Powermatic machine I would buy.

Big issue with the Grizzly and others is the serrated out feed wheel that imparts dents into the planed wood that take a lot of effort to sand off. At times you won’t even notice them until you start applying stain and finish. The Powermatic 15HH does not have this issue, and has some other improvements vs Grizzly but this was the big issue for me.

While this is true, for ~$40 and an hour worth of your time, you can order and replace the serrated roller with a rubber one. IMO the rubber one should be standard.

So maybe the question should be when is Powermatic having a sale?
My biggest reason for wanting to replace my 30 year old Jet lunchbox planer is the noise. That universal motor just screams.

Good luck trying to figure out when the next Powermatic sale will occur. They keep those cards close to their chest. If I were them, Id delay a sale as long as possible knowing that there is a shortage of Chinese knock off 8” jointers and 15” planers.

Update on the search.
Woodcraft is having a 10% off on Powermatic and Jet on May 4th and 5th. Free shipping but since I would have to pay sales tax it really isn’t much savings.
The Jet 15” is also out of stock apparently. So the question becomes can I talk the boss (aka my wife) into spending $1000 more than originally planned to get the Powermatic.
Also I have been tracking Grizzly’s site and they had a back in stock date of April 26th that now has been pushed back to May 16th.

I see on Grizzly’s site the rubber outfeed roller is indeed standard now.

The Grizzly G0453Z that I got last year came with rubber rollers Love that tool. I had a Delta 15” for years, it’s going on CL this Spring if no one here wants to buy it.

Just an update. Got tired of waiting on Grizzly (they are still not in stock) I found a 15” Jet on Craiglist. Doesn’t have a spiral head but I can get one later. The seller even delivered it. Still much quieter than the old lunch box planer that I was able to sell on Craigslist.

Have your say...
