I noticed a few weeks ago that Lowes added a Steel City planer and a jointer to their online selection. Yesterday i noticed they have added an entire line of SC tools. It makes me wonder if Lowes is going to drop their Porter Cable bench/stationary tools and adopt SC as their “house” brand. Kind of like what Ridgid is to Home Depot.
Anyway, I noticed SC is currently running a promotion on their entire line of machines. On the small end, I saw a 13” bench planer for $219. Its not their “helical” model, just plain straight blades. But if its as good as most lunchbox planers, $219 is a pretty good deal. One cool feature I noticed is it comes standard with a 2 1/2” and 4” dust chute. And unlike my PC planer, the chute is situated off to the side of the machine so the DC hose doesn’t get in the way.
Given Lowes return policy, if I were in the market for a planer, I might be willing to give it a try.

I also noticed they make a floor standing 6” jointer with a 45” granite table and a helical cutter. I actually am in the market for a jointer of this genre. I’m not sure about the helical cutter and granite table though. The costs of replacing blades is an unknown to me, and I’m afraid the granite tables might cause more headaches than they solve in terms of durability. Drop a hammer on cast iron, you get a ding. Drop a hammer on a granite slab…..........maybe a nick? Maybe a crack?
To be honest, I’m really just not too sure about SC in general. Reviews, especially on LJ seem to be a mixed bag about design, quality, and customer support. Of course, most reviews were a bit dated. I wonder if SC has improved?? Their entry level 14” bandsaw looks fairly nice. It’d be nicer if it didn’t include a tiny 3/4hp motor.

Let us know if you try the jointer. I’m also in the marker for something like that.

There was a similar post here on last Thursday or Friday, but no info from anyone that has tried these tools yet.

I haven’t seen a Steel City jointer in person yet though I tried a couple of months ago, the vendors seemed to have issues getting in orders. I’m curious as to how it will work out but they almost have to be better than the Porter Cable stationery offerings. For the jointers, Highland was running a special that attractive but they too were on backorder when I called a few weeks ago.

I’m curious about the air filter that looks pretty close to Jet for $249.

Have your say...
