Topic tags/keywords: router planes stanley 71-12 plane router blade

Hi LJ’s

Does anyone know whether or not the Veritas router plane blades fit the old Stanley 71 or 71-1/2? From pictures I’ve seen on the website the Veritas replacement cutters look like they might work. I picked up a nice “user” 71-1/2 (with box and label) at an auction a couple of weeks ago. The plane is in nice shape but the last user trashed the cutters trying to sharpen them. It looks like they were sharpened with a (dull) file. The spear point is really bad. I’ve spent several hours trying to rehab the two 1/4” cutters to no avail. I haven’t tried to tackle the spear point yet. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

The Veritas blades fit the Stanleys, you just have to reverse the depth adjusting nut. I have a set of the Veritas and they work with both the Stanley’s and Millers Falls.

Bill-

I sent LV an email but it is Saturday. They are all off for the weekend. I started this thread because I am impatient and I wanted to put in an order that would be filled/shipped on Monday if possible.

Thanks for this information. I’m going to order LV’s sharpening jig and a couple of cutters tonight. As for the cutters that came with the plane – I’m going to leave them be and let them RIP. I think they are beyond my ability to fix them.

Thanks Derek. Vic’s video was good but your article was even better. Your homemade router plane looks amazing. Nice job!

This is way late in coming but…

My Veritas cutters arrived and they fit the old Stanley beautifully. Thanks to everyone for the responses.
