Hey Guys/Gals,
I purchased the Powermatic at an online local auction. Unfortunately it came the Fort Worth School District School Shop. They closed their woodshop programs it seemed.

Anyway I believe it is the 70’s vintage with the Gumby Green . It is missing the motor cover. I haven’t used it because I want to completely go thru it and rebuild it. Replace bearings, guides, tires, and give it a paint job.

-Should I go with the Carter guides or stick with PM guides. The Carter guides seem like the way to go IMO.

-Any brand tires that you guys have found to be good.

-I believe I have a bearing supplier that a friend has used for his power tools, but I’m open to suggestions and advice

-I don’t have a fence. I’ve been eye-balling the Kreg system at Woodcraft. I haven’t looked at much else because I need to accomplish the above task first. But I’d like to know what guys are liking and using.

-Where to I find that paint color in a spray can?

If you want to fix it up for a project, fine. It may
“need” less work than you’re anticipating though.
Cracked rubber tires can be used for years before they
come off the wheels. Glazing can be removed
by sanding the lower tire under power. The upper
tire you’d need something like a helper turning the
wheel using a rubber sanding drum on an electric
drill. Urethane tires are not expensive and can be
ordered from sellers on ebay.

Guide blocks work fine. They can be unforgiving
when changing height on the upper blade guide…
depends on how parallel the travel of the guide
post and the blade are.

Tires is a mixed bag… half will tell you to go urethane, the other half will say to stick with the original rubber. You got to make up your own mind on that one. I put urethane on mine just because they are less hassle to install. I think they are all the same, although the blue ones seem to be more expensive.

Get your bearings from a reputable bearing supplier, such as Accurate Bearing. Better quality and generally cheaper price than you can find locally or from most of the on-line suppliers such as VXB.

I doubt you will find an exact match to the paint in a rattle can… best would be to take an unmolested part of the saw, such as under a badge, to a paint store to have them color match. Of course, you don’t have to be exact, so if you want to rattle can it, I’m sure you can find something close.

I did a write-up here not long ago for a mid 60’s
Powermatic 141.

For the tires, I went with urethane. It seems most of the commercial tires trace back to a single manufacturer so I just found the cheapest seller and went with that.

The stock guides are plenty serviceable and I prefer the scraper style for the lower guides since any debris that get between a bearing guide and the blade in this location can be quite destructive.

I sprayed mine “John Deere” green. Close enough color and available.

Thanks a lot for the inputs.

Accurate Bearing – that is the company I was going to use.

OWWM – I haven’t been there in awhile. I used the site when rebuilding my Rockwell drill press. I think found the PM 141 manual over there.

Guides – I’m not sure if these are the originals…doubtful consider the abuse it may have seen in a school shop. It is the standard 3 bearing setup on the guides.

Thanks for the link and writeup Splinter. I saved and will read it tonight. That’s a good point about the lower guides. I’ll look into that.

Hey Splintergroup, I read your blog on your rebuild. Very good job. I’m the type that gets an old used tool and I have to go through it completely and make it new. I’ve done that with a Rockwell Drill Press and an Atlas/Craftsman 12×24 metal lathe. I went overboard on it and set up a VFD, 3 phase motor, and row of switches programmed for various functions versus the OEM on/off switch.

So my next 2 projects are the PM Bandsaw and a Jet 20” drillpress which is pretty rough. I love doing this stuff.
