I finished a stabilized maple burl pen this morning with my usual CA glue finish. Turned out really nice. Came back and looked at the pen this evening and there is a rough patch on the barrel. It wasn’t there earlier. Any ideas on how this might of happened? Repairs that don’t involve stripping it down and refinishing it? Thanks all.

Hmmm … perhaps a porous area in the burl? Maybe you could burnish that area smooth with a crumpled brown paper bag, or a handful of fine wood shavings.

Do you use any accelerator when applying the CA finish? I’ve had this happen to me after about 20-30 minutes in spots on pens where I used accelerator, if I got a little too much on them. Other than that, maybe Ron’s suggestion about a porous section, if the CA hadn’t fully cured (the last few bottles of the StickFast I’ve gotten, even the thin, seem to be curing much slower than in previous uses).

However, if I were in your shoes, I’d probably just pop it back on the lathe and re-finish it. For small stuff like this, I’ve found it’s really easy for me to spend more time trying to figure out why it happened than actually fixing it.

Thanks fellows. I did refinish it on the lathe. I think the problem ended up being tiny pockets of wax caught in the glue. I switched to a new brand of CA glue for this pen and it didn’t seem to play well with my accelerator. The barrel felt dry before I applied the wax but there must of been a few damp spots. Refinished it. Client has it now. Everyone is happy.

Thanks for your help.
