I have just tried tar and mineral spirits to stain white oak and it does leave a nice antique look but would like to bring more red out.

should I stain reddish color first

Maybe…. I usually use Watco dark walnut oil on oak to make the wood have that look that screams Arts and Crafts….

Always make a sample board before you apply the finish.
