So, as I anticipate a year where I take it a little easier and have more time in my shop (Win!), I’m considering some projects I’d like to work on. I’d like a few smaller projects to knock out, and also a larger, longer running one that I can work on in pieces. So I’ve settled on box-making for smaller/more manageable projects, and a neck through electric guitar for my major time sink.

Now, aside from a stationary tray, flag shadow box, and bluetooth speaker, I don’t have much experience building boxes. More importantly, I have no experience in designing them. I have no particular style preference, so with that in mind, does anyone have any favorite books on box design/building that they’d recommend?

And that goes double for the guitar. I’ve never built an instrument, but I’d say I’m adequately tooled to do so, and will only need to build jigs and my patience. In particular, I know that the geometry of the neck and the angle at which it approaches the body will be important (and largely based upon which bridge I select), but I could really use a good beginner’s book for a build like this.

Any and all recommendations are appreciated!

Search the Projects tab here at LJ for lots of ideas for beautiful boxes. Can’t help with guitar, my only attempt was a cigar box 3 string.

Thanks, Charles! This is exactly what I was needing for the boxes! I love how the article starts with the fact that building one box a week was no major task, but designing a box per week was. :p
