Topic tags/keywords: green wood bowl carving

I have been interested in trying my hand at carving bowls from green wood for a few years now. As a proficient dabbler and tool collector, I did some research into the basic tools needed to give this a try only to find that the green wood gurus (Follansbee, David Fisher, and others) all use and recommend tools made by some fine gentleman and his son(s) from Sweden and that there seems to be no one in the US marketing these to the general public. While I have a few hatchets that I’m sure are workable substitutes, of particular concern is the bowl adze. The one widely available (Pfiel) is said to be all wrong for this type of work.

Maybe someone on this forum will be able to recommend a suitable alternative. Any suggestions? I have scoured local and nearby sources for antique tools with no luck finding anything remotely similar to the recommended adze.

-- She asked me, "Who are you going to please with that?" I said, "Me."

Depends on the size bowls you are looking to make but you can use large gouges instead of an adze. Possibly supplement it with some carving axe chopping to get some waste out and score the grain.

Also there is a seller on eBay that sells reasonably priced adzes. I haven’t tried them myself, but reviews that I’ve found seem to be good. Here’s the seller:

You could also buy a vintage adze from eBay or Etsy or something like that.

I’ve had no luck finding a bowl adze from local rust hunting either in a few years of looking. They must have not been all that common.

I’ve been in the same boat. From what I can tell about the only way to get a hold of one is to get on a waiting list and find something else to occupy you until your number comes up.

Have your say...
