I have a trellis im buildimg out of syp pt. I really like the patina of tung oil. Im just unsure if it will provide long term protection from weather. Reapplications? A no go?

When you say “tung oil” exactly which product do you refer too? Real tung oil or tung oil finish? Maybe it doesn’t matter, since (IMHO) neither will provide “long term” protection from the weather.

Oil finishes like Tung or BLO are not going to provide much protection. They disappear pretty quickly in the sun and rain. Ipe Oil for decks for example has to be reapplied every couple of years and is very expensive. Some sort of exterior stain is your best bet for protection but even they need to be reapplied from time to time and it may be difficult to find one that will give the SYP the look you would get with an oil finish like tung oil. If the trellis will have vines growing on it you won’t want to reapply anyway so eventually, you will just have to live with the weathered look regardless.
