Topic tags/keywords: dust collector question

I don’t think my shop’s wiring can handle over a 1HP DC, so that’s what I’m in the market for. I don’t mind moving it from machine to machine, and the runs will be short, so I think it will outperform my current setup of a shopvac w/ dust separator. The unit also needs a small footprint and can’t be taller than 6’4” (basement). I’m debating between these two systems:

They have similar HP, amperage and CFM ratings, though I know these are often off the mark. The Grizzly has the 1-micron canister filter, which leads me to believe it will hold suction better and give cleaner air. But it’s louder and $100 more. The Delta is cheaper and can be returned to HD, but it’s a bag type filter and the canister upgrade is another $300. My long-term goal would be to mount the motor directly over a Thien baffle / drum setup, but my shop time is pretty limited these days so I also want something that will work well from day 1 (as opposed to buying individual parts). Is one of these systems far better than the other? Is there another system I’m missing that may work better? I’ve also thought about buying the 1HP Harbor Freight unit just for the motor, but my thoughts are that it’d be inferior to either of these two and take more of my time to be functional. All input is appreciated.

I would prefer the Delta based on the stand
and wheels. I had an older JET dc with the
4 little casters underneath and the thing was
unpleasant to move around.

I eventually bought a pleated filter for that
JET. The seal wasn’t very satisfactory. It
worked ok I guess but I resented the floor
space it took up.

Another option instead of a pleated filter are
felted dust bags.

I haven’t used them.

Have your say...
