Here in southern california, great walnut at a good price is… impossible to get. I’ thinking about a road trip to Missouri? Iowa? Where? And picking up a few (3-4) hundred board feet. I’m thinking a sawmill moreso than a retail lumber yard. Where should I go? A recommendation for a Specific person or mill would be greatly appreciated. I’m thinking i’ll fly somewhere and rent a truck to get home. Black walnut pricing here runs from $8-$15 a board foot. Advice?

I get my hardwood at Hickory and Oak Sawmill in southwest Michigan. They show 4/4 walnut at $5.85 bf.

There probably are some aces in Iowa that are closer.

I think it would be cheaper to just buy it there.

Go to TH&H near you. They have good selection and the price is reasonable.
I do not think I would be willing to drive several thousand of miles in a truck, spend few days and fill in gas quite a few times to save $2 for a board foot on that amount of wood you plan to buy.
If you need tens of thousands of bf that could be a different story.

Great people, they bring a large pallet of wood for you to sort through, I just got 150 BF maple for my Roubo and it was $3.75 BF . selection was great
I think they quoted me $7 for 4/4 walnut
Unless you order from a place and have it trucked in it wouldnt be worth it, unless you want to go on a road trip for fun.
