Topic tags/keywords: mdf finishing chalkboard paint brush spraying

I have a sign I am painting in MDF. The challenge I am having trouble painting the edges and the faces where there are no globs of paint on either the edge or the face. I may try spraying but would prefer any tips for getting a clean smooth finish on edges and faced. The object is a state with curves.

I would seal the edges with a clear epoxy, applied in a thin coat and allowing to dry, before sanding smooth. Without penetrating the surface, it will be impossible to get a smooth finished edge. I would have chosen 2 sided MDO which is used on most highway signs exposed to the elements.
