My dad gave me this burl that he lopped off a downed sugar maple tree:

I don’t know what to do with it, neither from a storage point of view or a project point of view. For the time being, I’m more concerned about the former.

Can I leave it as is until I decide what to use it for, or will it crack like crazy while acclimating?

Paint the cut side of it with any old latex paint and set it on a shelf to dry for a couple years. Then you can cut it up and make what you want out of it.
