Hey all!

Hey all – I wanted to share a sawmill that i found through Craigslist and went to today in Naples NY. If you are in the western NY area it’s awesome! The guy had so much stuff sitting around outside and in his barn – some of it had been air drying for years. I got so excited seeing some the woods that I forgot to take pictures in the barn, except for this pile of Spalted maple I dug through. When he saw how much I was enjoying going throughout the stuff he took me on a tour of his property on his gator and showed me a ton of woods that had been drying for years. I saw some beautiful quarter sawn white oak that the ray flecks were just shimmering. I talked with the daughter and they were lamenting that they have so much great stuff but didn’t know where to advertise it, so I thought I would share. It’s definitely worth the drive – I got some great Spalted maple that will be a fantastic table and bench!

Great find. Neither Lakeshore or Pittsford has had spalted maple in ages. I go down there on business so I’ll have to get the address from you.

Looks like it could be good, but you really have to worry about powderpost beetles in a situation like that. You could end up with a pile of infested wood and a shop that now has to be completely cleaned out. Other wood boring pests are not a big deal because they will die when the wood is brought indoors, but powderpost beetles can easily continue to infest wood that is just air dried and stored inside or out.
