I currently have a beautiful 6 pc. Kawasei japanese dovetail chisel set.
Also a full set of misc. maker vintage bevel edge chisels that I usually take to site.

I am looking for one more nice set to compliment the dovetail chisels, an all around bench chisel set for chopping, maybe slightly more aggressive work – although my dovetail chisels have been excellent at chopping so far.

Something like the Veritas bench chisel set with O1 steel?
Lie Nielsen?

Is it redundant to get a regular, non dovetail set of Japanese chisels? So far with my limited experience I certainly prefer the Japanese laminated steel.

Willing to spend around $300 for a good set.

Veritas PMV-11 chisels. Hard to beat.

If you like the feel of Japan chisels you
might like Barr cabinet makers chisels.
They are around your price range.

Balance on my LN A2 chisels is superb but the Ashley Iles have thinner lands (beveled edges). And, the PMV-11 is superior to most steel except for the Japanese chisels. Personally, I like the edge that O1 gets better than A2 but A2 definitely holds the edge longer. The only PMV-11 I’ve got is a plane blade and it behaves very similar to 01.

So, IMO, the first possible response to your query is influenced by preference; the second, by the types of wood and types of use intended.

After reading (and wanting) some Japanese chisels, I marvel that you’re doing just the opposite. Owning lots of chisels is a good thing; isn’t it?

I like Ashley Isles, not always available though.
